Aircraft Registration Prefixes

An aircraft registration prefix is the national code at the start of a civil aircraft’s tail number — N for the United States, G for the United Kingdom, D for Germany. Each country’s mark is standardized through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and drawn from the radio call-sign blocks the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) allocates to nations. The table lists the current prefix for every country; click any column heading to sort.

Frequently asked questions

What is an aircraft registration prefix?

It is the national code at the start of a civil aircraft's registration, or tail number. A US aircraft begins with N, a German aircraft with D, and a British aircraft with G.

Who assigns aircraft registration prefixes?

The marks are standardized through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). They come from the call-sign prefix blocks that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) allocates to each country.

What is the United States aircraft registration prefix?

N. US civil aircraft are often called "N-numbers" because every registration starts with the letter N.

Why do some countries have more than one prefix?

A country may use separate blocks for different categories, such as government aircraft, gliders, or microlights, or it may keep an older mark in use alongside a newer one.

Is a registration prefix the same as a radio call sign?

No. The registration is the aircraft's permanent national identity, painted on the airframe. A call sign is what a flight uses on the radio, which for airlines is usually the company code and flight number rather than the registration.
